A Letter From Lisa

Written By Lisa Clifford - Author/Journalist

Hi there,

I hope this finds you healthy and happy, as well as writing and thinking about your project. This is just a personal note to keep in touch regarding our fall/autumn writing retreat in Florence this year.

We will hold one last Art of Writing four-day deep learning blitz from October 2-6. This will also be our final retreat at our 999 Euro price. So, it would be great if you could join us in 2022.

What makes this workshop different? Editorial Director, Martha Ashby, will join us from HarperCollins in London to chat about what she’s looking for.

Martha was the editor that picked up one of my favourite books, Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine. She is one of the most divine people in the publishing industry, so generous and kind with her time and guidance. It would be great if she could meet you via Zoom and hear your thoughts and questions on writing right now.

Bernadette Foley from Broadcast Books will talk to us about Plot. Laurel Cohn will help us understand how to best insert and write our character’s Backstory. I will teach memoir, following my experience with my own best seller The Promise.

We will start with The Essentials of Story to break down the fundamentals of what must happen in your narrative arc to engage your reader, so that won’t change.

From our June retreat, I can report one of our star classes was the Sense of Place Walking Trail. From San Niccolò through Piazza Santa Croce we strolled to San Ambrogio markets to join the local Florentines. There we tasted, touched, breathed, and pondered how food plays into our scenes and stories. We shared a fabulous lunch together. I would love to do something like that with you too in Florence!

Let me know if you would like to write with me from October 2-6. lisacliffordwriter@gmail.com

My very best from a hot and sultry Florence,

Lisa
