What's the difference between a 'beginner' and 'emerging' writer? What is an 'established' writer? And who decides on my level of expertise? There is now a way to describe writer 'levels.' Aspiring, emerging, developing and established are the most commonly recognised and quoted levels. If you've ever wondered where you sit, the system roughly works like this:
Aspiring: Writers just starting to find their feet in the writing world, who haven’t yet developed a steady practice.
Emerging: Writers who have formed a writing practice, had some writing published and may be actively involved in the writing community.
Developing: New authors with perhaps a full-length book published or several long-form pieces in established journals; a portion of their income may come from writing.
Established: Writers who have published two or more full length works or equivalent and a portion of their income is from writing.
We will take all four levels at The Art of Writing in Brisbane and Florence. Storytelling is analysed and made easy to understand. It’s essential to know how to deconstruct and construct storytelling elements individually.
In other news:
Our Time to Write live interview and writing zoom sessions have moved to Tuesdays (the Art of Writing site will be updated). That’s twice a month, on every second Tuesday night. On December 17 we will have out last zoom interview for 2024 with Vanessa McCausland, who we already know and love! We chatted to Vanessa about her book, DREAMING IN FRENCH in August last year. Vanessa’s new book THE LAST ILLUSION OF PAIGE WHITE was published last week.
Your zoom link is here and below. Save this link because it’s a recurring zoom so the link will always work.
What am I reading? STORYLINES. Finally! By our Art of Writing Brisbane teacher, Carrie Cox. Such a good read. I love Carrie’s themes. The way she weaves deep theme into plot. Deeper issues into humorous dialogue. Thank goodness she is teaching the Theme and Plot class from March 6-9! Because she is really good at it. Am very much enjoying the romantic element of this story, which also plays deeply into her themes. Carrie is also taking our Brisbane Character class. I meant to read STORYLINES ages ago but left my hard copy in Sydney. So only just got back to it now. Congratulations, Carrie (another Art of Writing alumni – yay!). So wonderful to see our alumni blossoming with their publications.
What am I listening to? Interviews with David Sedaris. Fascinated by his use of everyday stories to make his points. Or not. Linking an anecdotal story seems to be his strength. One of his books is next after Carrie’s book.
Hope to see you on Tuesday night at 7pm Sydney, 9am Italy and 8am UK for our chat with Vanessa! Following the Christmas break, our Time to Write schedule is as below. This zoom invitation is recurring so will not change. Save it! 😊 Then we write together for one hour in silence.
